Duncan Mitchell Toll, devoted family man
Duncan M. Toll, age 53, a resident of Wilton for over 20 years, died Wednesday March 3, 2010, at home, surrounded by his loving family, after a year-long battle with brain cancer. Born April 8, 1956 in Glen Cove, NY, he was the son of Philip A. Toll, Sr. of New Canaan and the late Dawn Vickers Toll of Greenwich.
Above all, Duncan found his greatest happiness and fulfillment in his family. Married to Jennifer Bauer for 21 years, their three daughters, Carolyn, Taylor, and Courtney, were the light of his life. He loved to travel with his family and attended every concert, dance show, soccer game and horse show in which his girls participated.
A 1979 Mechanical Engineering Graduate of Purdue University, Duncan spent much of his career in product design and development, having worked on projects for 3M, S. C. Johnson & Son, E. & J. Gallo, NASA, BMW Racing Team and others. He was a Senior Manager with the Soda-Mate subsidiary of Cadbury Schweppes, and later purchased the business with partners, becoming Executive VP of Operations. In the course of his career, he was awarded three patents for product innovations. He was also active as a private equity investor.
Duncan was a member and Trustee of the United Methodist Church of New Canaan. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Bank of New Canaan, and also on the board of the Wilton Education Foundation. Volunteering in the schools, he was a strong supporter of the Wilton Science Programs.
Duncan always approached life with limitless enthusiasm, generosity, compassion, humor, and a willingness to take on any adventure. Earning his pilot’s license before a driver’s license, flying was a life-long passion, ultimately leading to his Airline Transport Pilot Certificate. He has flown aircraft ranging from open cockpit biplanes to World War II fighters, to business jets, and the Space Shuttle simulator. Other pursuits included skydiving, car and motorcycle racing, and aerobatic flying.
In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his two brothers, Philip A. Toll, Jr. and his wife, Dee, of Reston, VA, and Harry V. Toll and his wife Nancy of Wilton; his sister-in-law Jocelyn C. Bauer of California; brother-in-law Bradley P. Bauer and his wife, Tina, of Wisconsin; cherished nieces and nephews; and his beloved Mother- and Father-in-Law Carol and George Bauer of Wilton.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday March 20, 2010 at the United Methodist Church, South Avenue, New Canaan, CT 06840 at 11:00 AM. Following the service, a reception will be held at the Church, hosted by the Caring Committee. Interment will be private. The Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main Street, New Canaan is handling the arrangements.
